A Real Nail Biter
You've got a big dog and he doesn't like having his nails clipped. Right? In fact he hates it. He'll snap and growl and nip. Anything to keep you from snipping his cuticles. (Cutting to the quick, so to speak.) So what do you do?
Well, there are innumerable solutions. The easiest being to put on the collar and secure the lead to something. A groomer's table has a stanchion on which to secure said lead.
But you don't have a groomer's table. Now what?
Will here's what you don't do. DO NOT secure the lead to the oven door in your kitchen. Yes, a big dog can tear the door off the oven and, already in a state of heightened anxiety, when the door clunks to the floor, this same big dog can become very frightened and start to run. . . with the oven door still attached to the lead.
Ah ha, and now you have a big dog, anxious to avoid nail clipping, frightened by the clanging and banging of the door against the floor, running, thinking, 'Hot damn this door is now chasing me.'
Barreling throughout the house, this big dog with the oven door in hot pursuit scurries around corners and the oven door gouges a trail—denting hardwood floors, punching holes in drywall, tearing upholstery, maybe even knocking over a prized collection of Hummels.
Think I'm kidding? Just remember that time tested aphorism. Sh*# happens. And this did.

A GREAT Dane

Am Can Ch. Maitau's Red White and Blond (Elle)
bred by Pat Ciampa, Virginia Frieberg, and Helen Cross
owned Helen McCarthy
Helen McCarthy has a big heart and, thank goodness, a big house. She has three Great Danes, Sonny, Elle, and the new pup, Stripes (a brindle who promises to be as big in the ring as he will be in size). And there's the Keeshund called Puppy, a rescued dog, who lives there, too.
For a lot of folks, four dogs isn't a lot. The truth is when one of them is Elle, well that's when you've got to hire the contractors to add more rooms. Elle just keeps winnning and winning and winning. Photos, ribbons, trophies and plaques galore are piling up. The dog room is full so now they're stacking up on the walls of the den.
Just a pup at the 2004 Great Dane National in Fort Worth, Elle went Winner's Bitch. She wasn't even a year old yet. This year she's been raking in BOBs and BOSs one after the other. For a young bitch (a misnomer in that Elle is as sweet as dog's get), Elle, not yet 3, has garnered enough points to rank her in the top Danes in the country. And the year is not over yet.
Here's a partial list of Elle's accomplishments to date:
Best of Winner's 2004 Great Dane National Specialty
BOB- Elmira KC
BOB- Albany KC
BOB- Oxridge KC
BOB- Romulus KC
BOB- Troy KC
BOB- Waldeboro KC
BOB- Balston Spa
BOB- Salisbury MD KC
Elle finished in Canada over the Thanksgiving Holiday.
Jamie Donelson is handling Elle and the two of them seem 'Elle' bent on winning. So we expect to see a few more photos and ribbons before Elle leaves the ring.
And this past weekend, Dec. 11, in Boston, Elle was BOB. She is headed for the top twenty in Great Danes. Good luck!!
